Zoopz.com - Games that Make You Think!

Fun and Educational Activities!

http://www.zoopz.com/zoopz/zoopz2.html

Click Parent and Teacher link for a description of each game.

Wordnik is a place for all the words, and everything known about them.

The goal is to show you as much information as possible.

By "information," they don't just mean traditional definitions. This information could be:

• An example sentence — tons of examples and gobs of other data for most words.

• Related words: not just synonyms and antonyms, but words that are used in the same contexts.Cheeseburger, milkshake, and doughnut aren't synonyms, but they show up in the same kinds of sentences.

• Images tagged by Flickr: want to know what a pout looks like?

• Statistics: how rare is the word?

• An audio pronunciation—and you can record your own!

In 1956, Benjamin Bloom headed a group of educational psychologists who developed a classification of levels of intellectual behavior important in learning. During the 1990's a new group of cognitive psychologist, lead by Lorin Anderson (a former student of Bloom's), updated the taxonomy reflecting relevance to 21st century work. The graphic is a representation of the NEW verbage associated with the long familiar Bloom's Taxonomy.

As you design your lessons be aware that it is important to promote the HOT (Higher Order Thinking) skills. Download the attached list of key words, model questions and instructional strategies that relate to each level of the revised taxonomy.

National Geographic Photo Jigsaw Puzzles

I noticed this on a past post in the FREE TECHNOLOGY FOR TEACHERS blog.

National Geographic has a daily user-generated photo gallery called the Your Shot Daily Dozen. The Daily Dozen is similar to the BBC's Day in Pictures series. The Daily Dozen contains user-submitted pictures from around the world.

National Geographic has two activities that students can use based on the Daily Dozen pictures, a jigsaw puzzle and a memory game. These activities could be a fun way for students to develop memory skills, matching skills, and puzzle solving skills.

Images could be used as conversation starters in current events courses, environmental science classes, or photography classes. The images could also be used as story starters for a creative writing class.

#39 of 365 -- Pic-Lit

This is a neat site posted by Jen Farr on Twitter - PIC-LITS - inspired picture writing.

http://www.piclits.com/compose_dragdrop.aspx

Pic-Lits is a creative writing site that provides pictures and a word bank for students to create a enriched sentence or sentences about the picture.

The object is to put the right words in the right place and the right order to capture the essence, story, and meaning of the picture. Students can choose to only drag words from the word bank to create their sentence or compose a sentence freestyle.

How to integrate Pic Lits into the classroom: Pic Lits is a great way to get students to think creatively and critically about writing. Students can choose any picture and then use the word list to create a sentence. Pic Lits is complete with punctuation and any word can be capatalized.

Tips: Students can sign up for a free account and save each Pic Lit they create. At the end of the year, each student can create a book of their Pic Lits to take home for creative inspiration.

If you have kids who have sweaty or sticky fingers, use a "finger glove." I take one of those cheap stretchy knit kid's gloves and cut the fingers off. Their fingers slide much more smoothly and things aren't dropped or double clicked any more.
